During the individual exercises, the handler may not touch the dog or guide it by the collar or in any other way, although he may use vocal commands to get the dog into position for the next exercise. The handler may pet or praise the dog moderately after each exercise is completed.

Penalties

All penalties are to be the same as in the regular exercises.

Heel Free and Figure 8 Routine and Judge's Orders

Same as in the Open Class except that the handler may not give any vocal commands. The handler must use signals only. Praise is allowed between the Heeling and Figure 8 portion of the exercise.

Stand for Examination

The judge will order "Forward" and then any other regular orders as in the Heel Free exercise, except that when the handler is at one end of the ring after a left, right, or about turn, the judge will order "Stand Your Dog" while the dog and handler are heeling, then "Leave Your Dog", whereby the handler walks away from the dog to the opposite end of the ring (distance to be about 9.14m (30 feet)) making an about turn and stands facing his dog. The judge gives the dog the Novice type of examination and then orders the handler to return to the dog. When the handler reaches the heel position after going around behind the dog, with the dog still standing, the judge says "Exercise Finished".

Drop on Recall Routine and Judge's Orders

Same as in the Open Class except that the dog must be dropped between 2 lines placed across its path in the center of the ring, the distance between the 2 lines to be approximately 2.44m (8 feet). At an indoor trial, the lines can be marked with chalk and, at an outdoor trial, by white cord laid on the ground. The dog shall drop between the 2 lines, touching neither one. The handler must not give a vocal command and may use only one arm with which to signal the dog, to come, drop and come again. The handler may use a vocal command for the stay and finish.

Penalties

Same as in the Open Class except that a dog dropping with more than half of its body over either line must receive a score of zero. A substantial penalty shall be given if any part of the dog's body extends over either line.

Select and Retrieve Wooden Article Routine and Judge's Orders

Same as in the Scent Discrimination Exercise in the Utility Class except that the dog must find and retrieve the handler's scented wooden article from amongst 4 other wooden articles placed about 15.24cm (6 inches) apart by the judge or a steward at a distance of about 4.57m (15 feet) away from the handler and dog.

Directed Jumping Routine and Judge's Orders

The handler shall enter the ring with the dog on a loose leash and shall stand still at the starting point, which shall be at one end of the ring. On the judge's order "Forward", the handler and dog shall proceed to the opposite end of the ring whereupon the judge shall order "About Turn" and "Halt" at which point the dog should sit in the heel position. On order from the judge, the handler leaves the dog and proceeds to the opposite end of the ring, does an about turn and halts facing the dog. The judge then designates the high jump to be taken first and the handler, as in the Utility exercise, commands and/or signals his dog to take the solid jump and finishes as in the Utility exercise. For the second half of the exercise, the routine and orders are the same, except that the judge designates the bar jump to be taken.

Penalties

Same as in the Utility exercise and the judge may penalize for poor heeling and a poor sit. The dog shall be scored zero if either jump is not correctly taken.

Long Sit Routine, Judge's Orders and Penalties

Same as in the Open Class with the handler out of sight for a period of not less than 3 minutes after leaving the dog.
